Watching the aurora in Canada

Much of northern Canada sits under the auroral oval, so Yellowknife, Whitehorse and Churchill see the lights on many clear nights. Farther south it takes a geomagnetic storm, and the display can come and go within half an hour, so keep checking once Kp reaches the level for your latitude.

Clouds matter as much as Kp: check the radar and satellite and your local forecast, then find a dark spot with a clear northern horizon.
