Full alert text
Freezing rain is expected over high elevations.
Locations: parts of western and northern Newfoundland.
Time span: Sunday.
Remarks: Precipitation is expected to fall as rain in communities in the region and throughout lower elevations, including along most roadways. However, temperatures will be cold enough to support freezing rain over higher terrain, particularly across the upper elevations of the Long Range Mountains and Gaff Topsails. Freezing rain could persist for several hours, with localized ice accretion exceeding 10 mm.
Ice buildup on exposed transmission infrastructure can lead to utility disruptions affecting surrounding areas. Backcountry travel routes may also become icy, potentially making access difficult.
The freezing rain is expected to transition to rain as temperatures rise above zero across all areas later Sunday into Sunday evening.
